Met Gala 2024: Live Updates from the Red Carpet on Fashion’s Biggest Night

It’s the first Monday in May, and PEOPLE has live updates from outside the Mark to on the Met steps — follow along

Fashion-heads and celebrity-watchers rejoice: after a year of waiting, fashion’s big night is back!

The 2024 Met Gala is being held on Monday, May 6 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a slew of Hollywood’s biggest names are preparing to walk the steps.

This year’s event is being co-chaired by Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth, Zendaya and Bad Bunny. As always, Vogue‘s Anna Wintour is at the helm at the Costume Institute benefit.

The theme — should the stars choose to follow it — is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” with a dress code of “The Garden of Time.” The corresponding Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibit is “very much an ode to nature and the emotional poetics of fashion,” curator Andrew Bolton has said — meaning we can anticipate some moody florals on the carpet.

While who turns up is always a surprise, we can hope to see some Met regulars: The Kardashian-Jenner family, Rihanna, Blake Lively and more.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who costar in the upcoming Wicked film adaptions, posed together on the Met carpet on Monday before gushing over each other during the Vogue livestream.

Grande’s strapless Loewe gown features a pleated shirt and mother-of-pearl bodice. Erivo’s Thom Brown two-piece evokes the garden theme with perfect, pink flowers covering the suit jacket and skirt.

Ben Affleck Is Not Attending the Met Gala with Wife Jennifer Lopez

No, there won’t be a Bennifer moment at this year’s Met Gala.

Jennifer Lopez is a co-host of the 2024 fundraiser, but her husband and often-red carpet date Affleck is not attending alongside her.

Affleck’s rep told PEOPLE that he’s busy filming The Accountant 2 in Los Angeles.

Demi Lovato Is Back at the Met Gala for the First Time Since 2016

Eight years later, Demi Lovato has returned to the Met Gala.

In 2016, Lovato attended the Gala but later told Billboard that she had a “terrible time.

But this year, they’re back, with the singer dressed in Prabal Gurung — a silver gown with floral appliques.

Rita Ora is attending her 10th Met Gala, so she absolutely knows how to stay on theme.

Ora spoke to Vogue alongside husband Taika Waititi , with both in Marni. “We really wanted to take fashion — for me with the theme — into sort of a timeless beauty so all of these beads age back into the first and second century B.C.,” explained Ora. “Some are older than I think anyone on this planet.”

She explained, “The team searched really far to find such individual beads.”

Charli XCX’s Dress Is Made of T-Shirts from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s

Charli XCX’s dress is made from something completely unexpected on the Met Gala carpet: t-shirts!

The white dress was crafted from t-shirts from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Charli XCX told Vogue. Explained the “Boys” singer: “over time t-shirts get more comfortable, they get more disheveled.”

Underneath the gown is a “bodice situation, and we wanted the underpinnings to be very visible.”

Eddie Redmayne and his wife Hannah Bagshawe are dressed as one for the Met Gala — and couldn’t be more excited about it.

“We’re wearing matching outfits,” Redmayne said on the Vogue livestream. “This is by a gentleman called Steve O Smith — a young designer. He’s had two collections. He’s an extraordinary man and an extraordinary designer.”

Explained Redmayne of Smith’s process, “He paints and does charcoal drawings that he then transfers onto [fabric].”

Emily Ratajkowski always dares to bare — and the Met Gala is no exception.

Ratajkowski stepped out in Atelier Versace FW01 Haute Couture with seemingly nothing else underneath, revealing both of her nipples and her bare bum.

The star went for a structural hairdo, with face-framing pieces pulled loose from the taut bun.

No first or second place here — Serena Williams and Michelle Yeoh are both Met Gala winners.

The retired tennis star and the Oscar-winning actress posed together inside the Mark hotel lobby before leaving for the Met Gala in complementary gold and silver gowns.

Williams paired her gold, one-shoulder dress with long black gloves, while Yeoh showed off her chic, new bob.

Our favorite tennis love triangle has made it to the Met.

Shortly after their costar Zendaya walked the museum steps in N.Y.C., Challengers stars Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor were also pictured at the annual event.

Faist accessorized his simple, black double-breasted blazer with what appeared to be a radish pin, while O’Connor went more daring in a tuxedo jacket with floor-scraping tails.

Tyla Works with Balmain for Her First Met Gala Look — But Finds It Challenging to Move

The sands of time are moving — but not up the Metropolitan Museum of Art stairs, unfortunately.

“Water” singer Tyla walked the carpet in a Balmain, fitted gown that is “sand, basically,” she told Vogue.

“It feels amazing,” the star said of being at the event. “I’m so excited to go inside and see all the pictures when I go home.”

Taylor Russell Achieves Her Dream of Being a Tree in Loewe

Bones and All actress Taylor Russell’s look has helped her achieve a personal goal, she joked during the Vogue livestream.

Russell picked a Loewe gown for the 2024 gala, which featured a stiff, wood-like bodice.

Of the look, Russell said, “We had talked about doing a wood sort of thing .. there was a bunch of different renders.”

“I’ve always wanted to be a tree and tonight that’s what I’m trying to do,” she teased.

Actress Rebecca Hall continued the floral motif on her Danielle Frankel strapless gown onto her body — literally.

For Monday’s Met, Hall had tiny florals in the same bright, jewel-toned colors as her dress painted all over her arms and up onto her shoulders.

Colman Domingo Carries Calla Lilies on the Carpet with His Caped Blazer

The Color Purple actor Colman Domingo carried a bouquet of calla lilies with him on “The Garden of Time” carpet, completing his black-and-white Willy Chavarria look.

Domingo’s white blazer featured a floor-scraping cape and an oversized floral detail on his lapel.

“It’s great strong shoulders … all of it feels like hot and street and sexy,” Domingo told Vogue.

Mindy Kaling Wears Structural Gaurav Gupta Gown for 2024 Gala

Mindy Kaling went for an avant-garde look by Indian designer Gaurav Gupta, a structural beige dress that Kaling said has a little “bling.”

The dress, Kaling told Vogue during the magazine’s livestream, that the gown’s name is “The Melting Flower of Time.”

Lea Michele is currently pregnant with her second child, but that isn’t stopping her from a big night out.

The Funny Girl star wore a robin’s egg blue dress, adorned with white daisies and coupled with a poofy, ruffled robe. The look is Rodarte, styled by Brian Meller.

Jennifer Lopez’s Gown Took 800 Hours to Make

Seriously — all those little silver pearls and rhinestones on Jennifer Lopez’s Met Gala dress were embroidered by hand.

The custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown took 800 hours of hand embroidery, the design house said. It features over 2,500,000 silver foil bugles and beads.

Zendaya Channels a Peacock for 2024 Met Gala Look

Zendaya is back at the Met Gala for the first time in five years, and boy, was the Challengers star missed.

In her latest collaboration with stylist Law Roach, Zendaya’s gala look evokes a peacock, with shades of green, purple and blue. The gown is custom Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano

The 2024 gala co-chair completed the dramatic look with a dark lip and a feather-topped hat.

Damon is attended the gala with his wife, Luciana Barroso, who complimented the actor’s black tux with a chic, white gown.

Bad Bunny Tops Off His Met Gala Look with a Hat and Sunnies

2024 co-host Bad Bunny has hit the carpet in Maison Margiela Artisnal Collection by John Galliano. The suit features red racing stripes down the inside of the legs, and paired with standout accessories including a hat, sunglasses and leather gloves.

The rapper completed the look with a pair of Maison Margiela’s signature Tabi boots.

PEOPLE Is Streaming Live from Outside of the Mark Hotel in N.Y.C.

Just a short walk from the Metropolitan Museum of Art is the Mark Hotel — also known as the starting point for many celebrities’ Met Gala adventure.

The 77th Street luxury hotel has become synonymous with the annual gala, as stars are photographed leaving the Mark to head to the Met after spending the day there getting ready.

This year, PEOPLE is livestreaming from outside of the hotel so fans can get a glimpse of the stars before they even make it to the Met.

Anna Wintour, Vogue‘s iconic editor-in-chief, has arrived at the 2024 Met Gala.

This year, Wintour opted for a dramatic, long black blazer adorned with red and yellow flowers, made custom by Loewe. Underneath, she picked a simple, white gown. One aspect of her look that’s remained steadfast from year to year? Her signature bob.

Wintour has co-chaired the Met Gala yearly since 1995, save for two years.

The Co-Hosts Are on Their Way to the Met!

Chris Hemsworth is one of four stars joining Anna Wintour to help co-chair this year’s Met Gala, and is already en route to the carpet.

Hemsworth was filmed leaving the nearby Mark Hotel on N.Y.C.’s Upper East Side with his wife Elsa Pataky on May 6. The Australian actor went for a monochromatic look in all cream, while Pataky opted for a body-hugging gold, long-sleeve gown.

It’s tradition that the co-hosts are among the first to arrive on the Met carpet, so it’s not surprising that the Hemsworths are making an early departure from the hotel.

The 2024 Met Gala Carpet Is Transformed Into a Beautiful Garden

Every year, the carpet, walls and inside of the tent are crafted to perfectly fit into the Met Gala’s theme.

This year’s theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and the gala itself has a dress code of “The Garden of Time.” And the 2024 steps are a cream with a soft ombre of green coming in from the edges. The press walls are, as usually, covered by greenery and flowers.

The true standout, though, are the tent walls, which feature large images of leafy trees.

The complete effect certainly evokes a garden.

Fans Are Already Gathering Across the Street from the Met

Though the Met Gala tent only allows a tiny glimpse into the swanky soiree, fans still gather across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to watch as the stars arrive for the big event.

Barricades are up allowing access only on one side of N.Y.C.’s Fifth Avenue, but people gathered early — hours before we can expect even the first celebrities to arrive for the party.

Co-Host Jennifer Lopez Says She Can’t Quite Walk in Her Look

While we haven’t seen 2024 Met Gala co-host Jennifer Lopez’s look just yet, we already know one detail about her ensemble: it’s difficult to walk in.

Lopez, who is attending her thirteenth gala, told Good Morning America on Monday morning, May 6, that she is “barely” able to move in her outfit.

But, that’s okay, she assured, as the Met Gala is not about “comfort.”
