TMZ Sports has confirmed that former guard Darius Morris died this week, with his family having offered the publication a statement.
“With great sadness we announce the passing of our dearly beloved son, Darius Aaron Morris,” it reads. “During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”
Darius was only 33.
A cause of death has not yet been revealed, with details still sketchy. But TMZ reports that his body was found in the Los Angeles Area on Thursday.
Morris had a memorable high school career in L.A. before playing for the Michigan Wolverines, where he also shone. He was named to the All-Big Ten Conference third team in his sophomore year.
He broke the program’s single-season record for assists that year, dishing out 235. It was broken by Trey Burke a few years later.
The Los Angeles Lakers Have Made A Statement On The Passing Of Darius Morris
Darius Morris was a second-round pick by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2011 and played two seasons with the team.
The Lakers took to social media to issue a brief statement on his passing.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Darius Morris,” the team said on Twitter/X.
Morris was also a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Brooklyn Nets. He averaged 3.3 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in 132 appearances.
He played in China, Russia, and France after leaving the NBA.
Our thoughts go out to Morris’ family, friends, and loved ones during their period of grief.
