Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard’s season hasn’t unfolded as anticipated. Despite securing his eighth All-Star selection, his performance has felt somewhat underwhelming.

While his statistics remain solid, including averages of 24.3 points and 7.0 assists per game, his shooting inconsistency has been notable, especially with a field goal percentage below .430.

Lillard did exhibit improved three-point shooting post-All-Star Break, hitting 38.3 percent from beyond the arc, seemingly finding comfort in head coach Doc Rivers’ offensive system.

However, Lillard’s fit within the Bucks’ roster seems less seamless than initially envisioned. Acquired to complement Giannis Antetokounmpo, he appears more like a star Milwaukee stumbled upon rather than a meticulously planned addition. The team’s prior reliance on versatile point guards like Eric Bledsoe and Jrue Holiday has shifted with Lillard’s arrival, tilting the team’s balance.

From the recent seasons of 2020-21 to 2022-23, Milwaukee boasted top-10 offensive or defensive ratings twice. Yet, this season, while ranking sixth in offensive rating (118.4), they lag behind defensively, standing at 19th (115.8).

This defensive decline marks a departure from their previous standards, dating back to 2017-18 when they last ranked in the bottom half of the league defensively.

With Lillard signed through 2026-27, the Bucks face several options. They could explore trading him this offseason, potentially for Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, a move that could benefit both parties.

Alternatively, they might retain Lillard for another season, evaluating his chemistry with Antetokounmpo and their potential for a championship run. Lastly, they could stick with Lillard for the long haul, considering his decorated career and scoring prowess.

However, regardless of their decision, ensuring Lillard’s commitment remains paramount. There have been doubts about his happiness in Milwaukee, exacerbated by personal challenges such as his ongoing divorce and separation from his children. Moreover, concerns linger about his leisure time in Milwaukee compared to potential destinations like Miami or Los Angeles.

Despite speculation and commentary, Lillard asserts his contentment with his current situation in Milwaukee, though he acknowledges external factors that sometimes affect him.

Nevertheless, his actions during the offseason will likely reveal his true intentions, especially concerning potential trade requests to teams offering a better work-life balance, such as the Miami Heat or the Los Angeles Lakers.
