Ex-Spurs Player Wonders If Gregg Popovich Is Wrong Coach For Victor Wembanyama
Victor Wembanyama has proven that there is a lot to be excited about for the San Antonio Spurs in the coming years.
Not only is Wembanyama already the most notable disruptive force in the NBA defensively right now, but he is also quite skilled offensively.
Unfortunately, despite all that, the Spurs are still 20-60 and sit dead last in the Western Conference.
Many have taken to blaming head coach Gregg Popovich for that.
This week, a former Spurs player openly wondered whether Popovich was the right coach for Wembanyama.
“I’m not sure, I don’t know, I don’t know what Pop you’re getting over there right now,” Rudy Gay said when pressed by Michele Beadle of the ‘Run It Back’ podcast on the matter.
“You know he’s a little older now, so you know I don’t know what’s going on. You know the game has changed a little bit, you know, so I don’t know, you know?
“I haven’t been in the locker room or been back but I know he has the knowledge to help the kid and obviously he has, this guy is running away with the Rookie of the Year and also putting up some historic stats.”
The Spurs’ inability to be any sort of meaningful force in the Western Conference since Tim Duncan’s retirement and Kawhi Leonard’s departure doesn’t help Popovich’s case any.
Popovich will go down in history as one of the greatest coaches of all time. But is he the right man to lead this Wembanyama-focused version of the Spurs? Time will tell.
